Community support for Wall Day continues, Casino Night set for May

By Jamie Biesiada

Wall Day 2010 promises to be an event dedicated to celebrating the Wall Township community with everything from live bands to fireworks.

The event could not be funded through the township’s municipal budget this year, due to budgetary constraints, but the community has stepped up with many donations, now totalling more than $12,000, to ensure the day’s success.

During the Wall Township Committee’s April 14 meeting, a group of residents stepped up to the plate with a donation from the Shore Acres Homeowners Association.

Atlantic Avenue resident Bill Spillane, who was joined by several other fellow residents, represented the homeowners association at the meeting.

Mr. Spillane explained that the association recently discussed the township’s call for donations, and decided to contribute to the community event to the tune of $200.

The committee gratefully accepted the donation on behalf of Committeeman Clinton Hoffman, who has been spearheading the Wall Day 2010 effort but was not in attendance at the meeting.

In addition to residents’ continuing donations toward the Wall Day 2010 effort, it was recently announced that a casino night fundraiser will be held, with proceeds going to Wall Day 2010 and, or future Wall Day events.

Previously, Committeeman Hoffman had said he believed a fundraiser — which has turned into Casino Night — would push the Wall Day funds over the edge. Proceeds from Casino Night, along with future donations, should provide enough money — an estimated total of $30,000, which includes the approximately $12,000 already raised — to host Wall Day, he said.

The Wall Recreation Department announced last week that Casino Night will be held on May 8, from 7 to 11 p.m. at GoodSports, 2903 Route 138 east.

There, attendees will be able to enjoy Monte Carlo games, such as blackjack, roulette and craps, with prizes. There will also be a Texas Hold’em poker tournament.

The cost to attend Casino Night is $65. Tickets include entrance and two drinks [beer and wine will be available], light fare from Michaelangelo’s in Wall, and $200 in “casino money.”

Prizes will be raffled off throughout the night, and the more casino money attendees earn, the greater number of tickets the player will receive — hence, odds of winning prizes will be increased.

The top prize value is set at $900. Prize drawings will begin at 10:30 p.m.

The Texas Hold’em tournament tickets are an extra $35, and will give a player $1,500 in Texas Hold’em money to use in the tournament. The top prize for the tournament will be valued at $500 and those participants are asked to show up promptly at 7 p.m.

Poker players will also be able to participate in the other casino games throughout the evening.

For tickets to Casino Night, please call 732-449-8444 or stop by the Wall Recreation Department. Members of the Wall Day 2010 fundraising committee, headed by former mayor Michael Clayton, will also have tickets available to sell.

Table sponsorships are available to businesses and individuals, as well. The sponsorships include tickets to Casino Night and special considerations at Wall Day 2010.

All proceeds from Casino Night will go toward Wall Day 2010 and, or, future Wall Day events.

More than 10,000 residents attended Wall Day 2009, where they enjoyed rides for children, live music, great food, games, and a fireworks display.

The Recreation Department asks residents to help fund Wall Day 2010 through private donations and sponsorships. The department is currently accepting personal donations and donations from Wall Township businesses.

Donations can be made at the Recreation Department, 2700 Allaire Road, and through the township’s Web site, www.wallnj.com.

Wall Day 2010 is set to take place on July 3.
